Luxury Large Sedans Once Costing 400,000–500,000 Yuan Now Available for Around 300,000 Yuan-Chinese LHD Cars for Export

On August 18, the trending topic “Massive Price Cuts Hit BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi; BMW 5 Series Drops to 280,000 Yuan” sparked heated online debate over the collapse of the long-standing price premium myth surrounding luxury vehicles.

That afternoon, reporters from Jiupai News visited multiple dealerships of Germany’s premium trio — BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi (collectively known as BBA) — across Wuhan and confirmed an industry-wide price slump. Top-selling models carry discounts exceeding 100,000 yuan, with some high-end variants marked down by over 200,000 yuan. Such steep rebates, however, are almost exclusively tied to financing packages, trade-in allowances and other promotional terms.

At BMW Dealerships

Sales consultants explained the BMW 525Li, with an official guide price of 368,000 yuan, now boasts substantial markdowns. Buyers opting for auto loans can secure the bare car for roughly 265,000 yuan. Eligible customers combining provincial old-for-new subsidies may see a final all-in cost as low as 295,000 yuan. In previous years, the bare vehicle alone neared 400,000 yuan, translating to a total discount of more than 100,000 yuan.

The popular long-wheelbase BMW 325 now carries an all-in price of just over 220,000 yuan. “The 3 Series has seen even deeper cuts than the 5 Series, with these generous promotions kicking in only one or two months ago,” a sales staff member noted.

At Audi Showrooms

The Audi A6L, the brand’s volume workhorse, is set to cease production next month as its generation cycle ends, triggering aggressive inventory clearance. With a factory sticker price of 454,900 yuan, the model currently qualifies for an immediate cash discount of 188,000 yuan. Financed buyers pay around 270,000 yuan for the bare unit, with full on-road costs landing near 310,000 yuan.

Dealers clarified these units are not aged surplus stock; steep discounts apply solely to outgoing models ahead of the next generation launch. Audi has expanded promotions across its entire lineup recently: flagship luxury trims receive maximum cuts of more than 200,000 yuan, while entry-level cars enjoy rebates of tens of thousands of yuan. Limited-time offers are prominently displayed at all Audi outlets.

At Mercedes-Benz Stores

Mercedes-Benz rolled out brand-exclusive trade-in incentives, stacking an 8,000-yuan manufacturer rebate alongside a 13,000-yuan provincial trade-in subsidy. After all deductions, the sought-after E300 Fashion trim retails at approximately 340,000 yuan bare, with full delivery costs topping 380,000 yuan — nearly 100,000 yuan cheaper than its 480,000-yuan all-in price back in April 2024. Sales advisors warned prices will bounce back to standard levels once updated generations hit showrooms, and comparable steep discounts will not return.

Root Causes Behind the Industry-wide Price War

Sales teams across all three brands cited two core drivers of the ongoing markdown wave: fierce competition from new energy vehicles (NEVs) and shifting consumer spending sentiment. Domestic electric models have flooded the 200,000–500,000-yuan market bracket, drawing swathes of prospective buyers with premium smart cockpits and advanced driver-assistance systems. Traditional premium gasoline carmakers have resorted to drastic price cuts to defend their market share.

Even with aggressive discounting, car buyers remain cautious. While promotions have boosted showroom foot traffic, higher visitor numbers have not translated proportionally into completed transactions. Audi sales revealed single-store monthly A6L deliveries have fallen from 200 units two to three years ago to roughly 100 today. BMW dealership monthly volumes slid from around 300 units previously to about 100. Mercedes-Benz staff added their monthly manufacturer sales targets now stand at barely over a dozen — quotas once easily met, now requiring all-out effort to hit.

Advice for Buyers Hunting for Bottom Prices

Dealers hold differing views on the optimal purchase window. Some predicted promotional margins will narrow starting September, as showroom foot traffic rises and manufacturers ease volume push targets, with prices firming further during year-end peak shopping periods. Others cautioned that ultra-deep discounts only coincide with outgoing model inventory clearances and generational transitions; newly launched models will never match the current level of price relief.
